Sunlight has always been one of the most fundamental elements of human health. Yet in the modern world, our relationship with the Sun has become increasingly complicated.

Living in Central Europe, we spend many months of the year with limited sunlight. Then when summer finally arrives, we are often told to avoid the Sun completely. Somewhere between these extremes, we may have lost a more natural relationship with sunlight.
Yet science increasingly confirms what traditional cultures have always known: sunlight plays a vital role in our wellbeing.
Morning sunlight helps regulate our circadian rhythm, supports hormone balance, and improves sleep quality. It also plays an important role in nervous system regulation, vitamin D production, and mood support, gently promote a sense of calm, balance, and overall well-being.
The key is not avoidance, but balance.
Choosing the Right Time for Sunlight
In the height of summer, the intensity of the midday Sun can be overwhelming for the skin.
In my own experience, spending time outdoors during the gentler hours of the day, early morning or later in the afternoon and evening, allows the skin to adapt more gradually. With this approach, the skin often develops a more even and healthy tan while experiencing less irritation or stress.
Learning to listen to the body and respecting natural rhythms can transform our relationship with the Sun.

Supporting the Skin Barrier Naturally
Another important factor is the condition of the skin itself.
Healthy, nourished skin is naturally more resilient. When the skin barrier is supported with high-quality botanical oils and natural ingredients, it becomes better equipped to respond to environmental stressors, including sunlight.
In my personal routine, I often recommend strengthening the skin first, for example with the Earth to You Flow Set, which helps restore balance and vitality to the facial skin.
For body care, simple oils such as Jojoba oil can nourish the skin and support its natural protective functions.
Rather than overwhelming the skin with many products, focusing on nutrient-rich, natural ingredients often allows the skin to regain its natural balance.

Nutrition and Skin Resilience
What we eat also has a profound impact on how our skin responds to sunlight.
A diverse, nutrient-rich diet supports the body from within. Whole foods rich in antioxidants, minerals and healthy fats contribute to stronger, more resilient skin.

Instead of highly processed foods and refined oils, it can be helpful to prioritise foods such as:
nuts and seeds
avocados
leafy greens like kale and spinach
fresh fruits and vegetables
whole grains
Diversity in nutrition often translates into vitality in the skin.
Living in Harmony With the Sun
Caring for our relationship with the Sun is not about fear or total avoidance. It is about understanding natural rhythms, supporting the skin from within and allowing the body to gradually adapt.
The Sun is not only something to protect ourselves from.
It is also something we are meant to receive.
